The mine of Phytoliriomyza perpusilla illustrated for the first time
The below image is most likely the first photograph to be taken of the indistinct, external stem mine, of the rare Phytoliriomyza perpusilla (Meigen, 1830).
The mines of this seldom collected species were observed in a ‘weedy’ part of a private garden in East Yorkshire during late June 2023. The mines consisted of a very faint, linear, stem mine with frass in small grains, often creating ‘pearl-chains’. Pupariation occured at the end of the mine, just under the epidermis.
